Taurach- and Murtalbahn 05/06.10.2019

A scenic trip to our Salzburg and Styrian friends

And again, the Südbahn Express is drawn into the distance. For 2 days we want to visit our friends at the Murtal- and Taurachbahn. A special rarity for friends of steam operation.

The Murtalbahn (opened on 8 October 1894)

Unzmarkt – Murau (Styria)
On 27 August 1893 the ground-breaking ceremony took place in the presence of Adolph Josef Fürst zu Schwarzenberg. Under the direction of the first provincial railway director of Styria, Dr. h.c. Carl Wurmb, the 76.230 km long line was completed in only 316 days. A total of 12 stations and 14 stops were built. The management and the workshop were in Murau and heating houses were in Unzmarkt, Murau and Mauterndorf. 7 water stations were available to supply the steam locomotives. The stations communicated with each other and with the trains on the line by telephone, a pioneering achievement, as communication at that time was usually via Morse telegraphs.

The Taurach Railway

Murau – Tamsweg (Salzburg)
The Taurachbahn is located in the Lungau (Salzburgerland), a high basin surrounded by the Radstädter Tauern in the north, the Hohe Tauern in the west and the Nockbergen in the south. The railway got its name from the “Taurach”, a mountain river which has its source in the Tauern massifs and which is followed by the railway from Mauterndorf to Tamsweg.
Originally the Taurachbahn was part of the Murtalbahn. But right from the beginning this section from Tamsweg to Mauterndorf was in a disadvantaged situation. After the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen had submitted the application for closure and the Tamsweg – Mauterndorf section had been legally closed since 1 September 1981, Club 760 made an effort to complete the route. The aim of the club was to preserve the full length of the Murtalbahn.
